Talking Jackass

Lessons from a talking jackass and pagan sorcerer – there’s hope for all of us!

Football season is over. I’m exhausted. There is so much hype surrounding the Super Bowl. It’s more than a marketing contraption. It’s an iconic American institution. From the spectators to the players to the media to the advertisers – even the halftime show is a spectacle.

Some Perspective

Quickly – name the last four winners of the Super Bowl.

The vast majority of us would struggle to enumerate that list. So, as big a deal as the Super Bowl is – it really isn’t.

Lighten Up

I’ve always been impressed with a sound bite that is played, usually during a time out, at FSU home games. Over the loudspeakers, the beloved Coach Bobby Bowden comes on and encourages FSU fans to cheer for our team. He then admonishes the crowd to be nice to the visiting team. He ends his speech with something like:

“after all, it’s hard for us to get teams to come here to play us!”

I think we all could benefit from Coach Bowden’s wisdom in using humor to make a serious point. I hope to do that in today’s post.

It’s Campaign Season

Quickly – name the last four Presidents.

I think the vast majority of us could do that – although maybe with a little struggle.

I urge all of us to heed Coach Bowden’s wisdom. Support the candidate of your choice. At the same time, I hope we can show respect for others who support a different candidate. In hopes of tapping Coach Bowden’s use of humor…

“after all, we’re going to need their support after the primaries!”

The Talking Jackass

Verse

Now Balaam was no “good guy”. He was a pagan sorcerer. Yet, if you read the entire story, God used him.

A jackass is no symbol of oratory skill. Yet, God used the jackass.

If God can use a pagan sorcerer and a talking jackass – there’s hope for all of us!

The Super Bowl is a big deal that isn’t. I submit to you that the race for the Office of President of the United States, as big a deal as that is – it isn’t.

Why?

Because God is, always has been, and always will be the King of Kings. Regardless of who is President, my faith is in God. After all, He can even use a talking jackass!

That’s what I think. I’m interested in your thoughts. There’s lots of ways to hit me up so let me hear from you.

  1. My first thought is that, yes, thank heavens Jesus is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the scripture also teaches us that, “Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a disgrace to any people.” Prov. 14:34 and we need to pray fervently and work diligently to put strong leaders in office.
