Sleeping Through the Storm

Our earthly vessels will encounter storms in the journey of life. We should fixate on faith, not fear.

Today’s empowerment is inspired from a passage of scripture found in Matthew 8:23-27

This is not just another entry in a long list of magic shows.

Was This a Miracle?

The disciples were “amazed” and asked “What kind of man is this?”. If I would have been there, I would have slapped them! Why are you amazed? What would have been amazing is if the winds and waves DID NOT obey him! The disciples had witnessed many miracles. This should have been routine!

While the disciples were in full panic, Jesus was asleep. I think it’s safe to assume that the boat was being violently tossed and turned, so why did the disciples assume that Jesus was not situationally aware? Jesus was more than situationally aware. He knew about the storm before the boat set sail.

Lord Save Us!

I’m going to give the disciples the benefit of the doubt. There is some doubt because so often we cry out to the Lord to save ME! Kinda selfish huh? By the way, there is no record of the disciples thanking Jesus for rescuing them.

Why Are You So Afraid?

I detect a little sarcasm. Perhaps Jesus posed this question nonchalently, but he preceded the question with a rebuke “you of little faith”. Regardless, notice that Jesus did not ask “why are you afraid?”. Duh – there’s a violent storm raging! After all, two of the men on that vessel were seasoned mariners that had probably seen a storm or two. If they were in full panic – it must have been a bad storm! Instead Jesus questioned their degree of fear and points out their deficiency of faith. I think it’s clear that Jesus was trying to get the disciples fixated on faith instead of fear. I think that’s the lesson here. We need to be situationally aware. We should be vigilant and have valid concerns. But when we fixate on the problem – we rob ourselves of peace and power. We’d do better to fixate on faith.

As our bodily vessels travel through the journey of life, there will be storms. When the winds blow, fixate on God.

That’s what I think. I’m interested in your thoughts. There’s lots of ways to hit me up so let me hear from you.
