Did you know that most of the electricity flowing through a wire is flowing on the outside edge of the wire? It’s called the “skin effect”. I won’t go into the molecular physics that proves this point (and you should be grateful). It’s easier to understand with some simple illustrations:
- Stranded vs Solid Wire
- Shoe Polish
Have you ever heard how things “rub off”? You know, you hang around bad folks, and their bad influence “rubs off” on you! The good news is that the converse is true if you hang around good folks!
Can something on the inside “rub off”? Not really. It’s kinda like electricity. It’s the outer layer that makes things happen.
What about our Christian testimony? It seems we invest a lot of time developing ourselves more or less in secret.
- Our Personal Devotionals (“quiet time”)
- Worship Attendance
- Small Group Bible Study
All of these are good things, but the focus seems to be on developing what’s on the inside – at our core so to speak. As Christians, if we’re going to make a difference – “rub off” so to speak – we need to get what we’ve got on the inside… outside!
Over the past few years, homosexuals have been “coming out”. Transitioning from a secret lifestyle to a public and notorious one. Guess what? It has emboldened and even attracted others to become homosexuals. Homosexuality is nothing new. What is new is that what was shamefully done in secret is now celebrated openly.
It’s the “skin effect” in operation. Whether for good or evil – What’s on the outside rubs off. I suggest we as Christians do some “coming out” of our own for Christ.
That’s what’s on my mind. I’m interested in your thoughts. There’s lots of ways to hit me up so let me hear from you.
